AM109.S*007* - Mistral Spyder 3700 (or 3500?) - 1964

Mistral

Bonhams’ Rétromobile auction, Paris 2019

https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/25339/lot/287/

Only the seventh Mistral Spyder built, chassis ‘007’ is one of only 46 completed with the 3.7-litre engine and was delivered new to Switzerland; remarkably, it has belonged to the same family since 1971. This car left the factory equipped with the often-troublesome Lucas fuel injection, which has been replaced with triple Weber carburettors, a common conversion (the original un-restored injection system is included in the sale).

Following a partial restoration of the coachwork carried out in 1989, the owner decided to commission a total rebuild, which commenced in 1999, though unforeseen circumstances would delay the project’s completion until 2010. Works carried out included a complete overhaul of the body, interior, convertible hood, engine, gearbox, rear axle, suspension, and brakes. Described by the vendor as in very good condition, this most handsome soft-top Maserati is offered with Swiss registration papers and all maintenance and restoration records dating back to 1971.

According to the Hammer Price app bidding stopped at 400.000 EUR

be aware of the fact that this is the 3rd Spyder, and that would make it a 3.5 and not a 3.7. There is no proof of this but just something to keep in mind when assessing this car.

Continuing the discussion from AM109.S007 - Mistral Spyder 3700 - 1964:

I have seen and inspected the car several times. It certainly was a 3500 as from the factory, but later received a 3700 engine. The Swiss carte grise mentioned a 3700 engine, which they only do if the engine has been changed to a different capacity.
Most likely, the long-time Swiss owner, a physician who was engaging in a rolling restoration over the 20 years or so of his ownership, exchanged the engine some time ago to a 3700 engine.
The car unfortunately has many small and bigger mistakes made in the restoration process.

August 2020: Car is up for sale again with Bonhams: https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/26261/preview_lot/5377261/

this time they added an erratum in the description:

Please note that the Maserati factory archives have confirmed that this car is the fourth Mistral Spyder manufactured and not the seventh and that it is one of the mere 27 Mistral Spyders with a 3,5-litre engine and not one of the 46 built with the 3.7-litre as stated in the catalogue.

In his K500 newsletter of 21 September 2020 on the Bonhams Bonmont auction, Simon Kidston mentions the car under the section Well bought adding: “It was an early 3.5-litre car (chassis 007, but actually the fourth car built) with one family owner since 1971, so CHF 431,45k all-in - say $475k - for the restored Maserati Mistral Spyder made it a bargain.”

3 days after its sale in the Bonmont auction in Cheserex, Switzerland, this MIstral Spyder appears on mobile.de for 480.000 euro at a German dealer Gassmann gmbh. It is advertised as a " Maserati Mistral Spyder 3.5-litre Cabriolet ". The pictures are the same as used for the Bonhams auction. Remember it was sold for 400.000 euro including fees 3 days before.

Yes, true. But she was under Swiss papers, so import duties are due. Could make up for the difference.

If indeed it is a matching numbers car as stated in Bonhams description , there should be a Maserati Classiche certificate .
